"With the right training and development, we are confident the association will be able to take those first steps toward introducing regular skills development and fostering a core group of competent and confident coaches."
On Sunday, 16th March, the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre played host to an inspiring and impactful Professional Development Day, delivered by Badminton WA. Thanks to the support of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) and their Coaching and Officiating Grant, this event became a valuable opportunity for skill enhancement and community growth within the Great Southern Badminton Association.
While the initial goal was to engage teachers in a professional development event, the session proved to be incredibly beneficial for all who attended. Led by the outstanding duo of Rosemary and Nigel Smith, the training left participants feeling energised and inspired. Their ability to break down simple yet effective concepts had a profound impact, reinforcing the power of great coaching in building badminton’s future in the region.
The session saw 12 engaged participants, each taking away valuable insights and practical techniques to enhance their own skills and, importantly, to contribute to the development of badminton within the association. Many attendees gained personal confidence, while others observed how expertly delivered training can create a ripple effect, inspiring further coaching and skills development in the Great Southern region.
Rhett Eiffler, Secretary of the Great Southern Badminton Association, shared his enthusiasm for the event, stating, "We were genuinely impressed by how well Rosie delivered the training, with Nigel providing fantastic support. It’s left us feeling very inspired. Everyone who attended walked away with something valuable, and the session had a really positive impact." He also highlighted the potential for ongoing development, adding, "With the right training and development, we are confident the association will be able to take those first steps toward introducing regular skills development and fostering a core group of competent and confident coaches."
A special thank you goes to Judy Cousins and the Badminton WA team for their tireless efforts in organising this event, ensuring its success, and supporting regional badminton growth. Additional gratitude extends to Rosie and Nigel for their dedication and willingness to travel to Albany to share their wealth of knowledge and experience.
The overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees confirms the significance of such initiatives. As Badminton WA continues to prioritise growth across all regions of Western Australia, the success of this event sets the stage for future opportunities and ongoing development.
We look forward to catching up with everyone at the upcoming Country Week and the Autumn Tournament on April 26-27. With momentum building, the future of badminton in the Great Southern region looks brighter than ever!
